What Is Petrified Wood?
Petrified wood is actually a fossilized tree that was buried by floods, landslides, or volcanic ash. Because of a lack of oxygen, the rotting process is extremely slow. Water rich with minerals (silicates or calcites), combined with traces of dissolved minerals such as iron oxides, results in a wide variety of brown and tan shades. Over hundreds of thousands of years, as the organic material in the original log slowly decays, microscopic mineral particles replace it in such minute detail that the cell structure of the original wood is perfectly replicated — a process called permineralization. Details such as growth rings, bark, and knots are preserved in perfect detail.
The resulting petrified wood is extremely hard — 8.0+ on the Mohs scale (diamonds rate a 10) — and can only be cut with specially designed diamond saws, making it an exceptionally durable surface for table and countertop applications.
