How to Acclimatize Hardwood Flooring: Solid vs. Engineered (and Why Our Okanagan Climate Matters)
Bringing home beautiful new hardwood is exciting — but the single most important step happens before the first plank is nailed or glued down. It’s called acclimatization: letting the wood adjust to the temperature and humidity of your home before installation. Skip it, and even the finest floor can gap, cup, or buckle within a season. Here in Penticton and the Okanagan, where our semi-arid climate swings from dry winters to warm summers, acclimatization matters more than almost anywhere else in Canada.
Why Wood Needs to Acclimatize
Wood is hygroscopic — it constantly absorbs and releases moisture until it reaches balance with the air around it. If flooring is installed while it’s wetter or drier than your home’s normal conditions, it will keep adjusting after installation. That movement is what causes gaps between boards, cupped or crowned planks, and squeaks.
The goal is simple: install the wood when its moisture content matches the long-term average conditions of the room it will live in.
Solid vs. Engineered: They’re Not the Same
Solid Hardwood
Solid planks are one piece of wood top to bottom, so they move the most with humidity changes. Plan for a longer acclimatization period:
- Deliver the flooring at least 5–7 days before installation (longer for wide planks and dense exotic species).
- Store it in the actual room where it will be installed — never a garage, basement slab, or storage unit.
- Open the ends of the boxes or cross-stack the planks with spacers so air can circulate.
- Ideal target: wood moisture content within 2–4% of the subfloor, verified with a moisture meter.
Engineered Hardwood
Engineered planks are built from cross-layered plies, which makes them far more dimensionally stable. They still need to adjust, just not as long:
- Acclimatize sealed boxes in the installation space for 48–72 hours.
- Keep boxes flat and off concrete — set them on the subfloor or on sleepers.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions; some engineered products with HDF cores need the full 72 hours.
Get the Room Ready First
Acclimatization only works if the house is at normal living conditions. Before the wood arrives:
- Heating and cooling should be running at everyday settings — 18–24°C and 30–50% relative humidity — for at least a week before delivery.
- All wet trades (drywall mud, paint, tile setting, concrete) must be fully dry. Fresh drywall compound can dump litres of moisture into the air.
- Test the subfloor: wood subfloors should read below 12% moisture; concrete needs a calcium-chloride or RH test before glue-down installs.
Dry Climates: The Okanagan Winter Problem
Our valley is one of the driest regions in Canada, and winter heating pushes indoor humidity even lower — sometimes under 20%. In very dry air, wood shrinks. That shows up as thin gaps between boards in January and February, and in severe cases, surface checking or splits.
What to do: run a humidifier (whole-home units are best) to hold 30–40% RH through winter, and don’t panic over hairline seasonal gaps — most close up again in spring. If you’re choosing a floor for a home that sits empty in winter, engineered hardwood or a quality luxury vinyl plank is the safer choice.
Wet or Humid Conditions
High humidity does the opposite: planks absorb moisture and expand. With nowhere to go, boards press against each other and cup (edges higher than centres) or, in extreme cases, buckle right off the subfloor. Common culprits are summer humidity in homes without air conditioning, damp basements and crawl spaces, and plumbing or appliance leaks.
What to do: keep humidity under 50% with air conditioning or a dehumidifier, always use the correct vapour barrier or underlayment over concrete, and leave the expansion gap around the room perimeter — that little space under your baseboards is what lets the floor breathe.
Quick Acclimatization Checklist
- HVAC running at normal living conditions for 1+ week before delivery
- Wet trades finished and fully dry
- Solid hardwood: 5–7+ days in the installation room, boxes opened
- Engineered hardwood: 48–72 hours, boxes flat
- Moisture meter readings: wood within 2–4% of subfloor
- Maintain 30–50% RH year-round after installation
